Frequently Asked Questions… .
1. What is the difference between Rec and Travel basketball? Recreation (Rec) basketball is open to everyone regardless of skill level. Each team is composed of players with a wide range of skill levels. All players are guaranteed a minimum amount of playing time in each game. Everyone who signs up for the Rec program before the registration end date is guaranteed placement on a team. Typically in the Rec League your son will have one 60 minute practice and one game per week. Travel basketball is more competitive and demanding (both for players and parents). Teams are chosen through a tryout process by the travel coaches. Travel teams require more practice time (generally twice a week for 90 minutes), often play both weeknight and weekend games, and hold their games at gyms across their area. Elite Basketball travel teams, often travel out of state to compete in tournaments. When making a travel team, it is committing to this practice and game schedule. 2. Should my child try out for the Limitless Travel basketball team? This is an individual family decision. Travel basketball requires a higher level of skill–not all players that tryout make a team. Unlike Rec basketball, travel basketball has no minimum playing time requirement and the allocation of playing time is up to the coach. Players participating in the Travel program get more instruction, play on teams where the skill levels are more consistent, and play against stronger competition than in a Rec program. This allows them to develop their skills at a faster pace and be better prepared to play for their high school teams when they reach high school age. 3. How do I sign up for Limitless Travel Basketball? Players will need to register for tryouts online whenever the tryout period is open. You can also send a message on the contact page. 4. What is the cost to register? Are there other costs as well? There is a $20 fee to register for travel tryouts. Once players are selected for teams, there will be team registration (which include uniforms) and monthly dues (covers insurance, indoor gym fees, and tournament entry fees) (travel, meals, hotels are separate and are the responsibility of each player and parent). 5. I want to register online but do not want to pay by credit card. What should I do? You can register online and select to pay by debit or cash. Contact us for more information. 6. How old does my child have to be to play Travel Basketball? Limitless Travel teams are grade-based rather than age-based. LBF fields teams in the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, & 11th grades. Players are eligible for these leagues as long as they are in the specified grade (or playing up from a prior grade) and are not more than 2 year older than others in their grade as of August 31 (for example, no player on the 5th grade team can be 12 as of August 31). All players selected to travel teams must obtain documentation of their current grade and give a copy to their coach. 7. When and where are the tryouts held? The tryout schedule is posted on the Limitless website and social media sites. Note that you should check the schedule frequently since it is subject to change due to gym closures and the like. The tryout dates vary by grade and gender—please go to the Travel Team tab on the home page of the Limitless Basketball Florida website for specific times, dates and locations. 8. My son plays another sport? What do I do about conflicts with the Travel tryouts or practices? Limitless Basketball understands that many of its basketball players may be playing soccer, football, baseball, or other sports as well as participating in the LBF Travel basketball program. With regard to the tryouts, Limitless Basketball asks you to ask the other sports to allow your child to be released to attend at least two of the basketball tryouts. Once a player has been selected to a Travel team, Limitless Basketball understands that their first commitment is to their Fall/Winter sport team. You should inform your LBF Basketball coach of any conflicts that may exist and try to make as many basketball tryouts or pre-season games as possible. However, Starting in mid-November, Travel Basketball should be considered the primary sport. 9. Once a player makes a Travel Team are they guaranteed a spot the next year? NO! Players are selected based on ability. The Travel program does everything possible to make the selection process as fair as possible. It is a fact that most Travel players return and play the following season. However, this does not mean that LBF views these players as having a guaranteed spot on the following season’s roster. All positions on all rosters are open to all competitors on a season-by-season basis. Players in all grades are required to attend tryouts if they wish to play on one of the LBF teams. If a child who played on an Limitless Basketball Florida team last year does not attend tryouts, it is assumed that they have decided not to play on an LBF team this upcoming year. 10. When does the Travel season start and end? For the Travel program, practices will begin in mid to late September once the teams have been selected. We run a full year program and anticipate the season ending in July. 11. How are the Travel teams selected? The individuals who sign up for Travel basketball participate in a series of tryouts held in early October. Most grades hold 2 tryout sessions, players must attend at least one of these two tryout sessions in order to be considered for selection to a team. The tryouts consist of a series of skill drills and scrimmages over the two days. The tryouts are run by the Travel coaches, over the course of the two tryout sessions the coaches evaluate each player and select a pool of players that will form the teams. The Basketball Board will attempt to make available a representative overseeing both the tryouts and player assignments to ensure fairness in the selection process. Please check the Basketball page of the LBF website (limitlessbasketballflorida.com) in mid-August for up to date information on where and when the tryouts for each grade/gender group are being held. 12. How many Travel teams does LBF have at each grade/gender level? The LBF basketball board decided that the first priority of the LBF Travel basketball program would be to maximize the number of players participating at the Travel level so as to best prepare these kids to play high school basketball. Thus, LBF strives to field a maximum number of teams at each grade level (at least 2) if sufficient talent exists for competitive teams. Fielding multiple teams rather than just one or two, means that more players participate but the overall talent level of each team could be somewhat reduced. 13. How many kids are on each Travel team? LBF Basketball has mandated a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 12 players on each Travel team. Note that each team selects a max of 10 players in the initial draft; if any team wants to add an 11th or 12th player, this is done after the initial draft. 14. How are kids notified as to who has been selected for the Travel teams? Coaches usually call all the families and let them know of the decision. Players may be notified by phone, text, or e-mail. In either case the family has the right to call the head coach and ask why their child was not selected. 15. Some kids who tried out for Travel basketball have been notified but my child has not. What should I do? All those who try out for Travel basketball should be notified within 5 days of the final tryout (sometimes it takes a few days for the coaches to find a chance to meet and draft the teams and another few days to contact all the players). If you have not heard by that time, contact LBF on the contact page and we will contact the coaches to find out what the status of the notification process is. 16. My child tried out for Travel basketball but was not selected. What happens now? If a child registered for LBF basketball and tried out for a Travel team but was not selected, he/she is automatically placed in a waiting list pool. Sometimes there are additional openings or teams that are formed during the season and the player can be contacted for an additional try out. All players are invited to join our training options to help improve their basketball skills, even if they do not make the travel teams. 17. When and where are Travel practices held? Practices for the Travel teams are held at various local schools. Practice day, time and locations are selected by the head coach. Travel teams have two 90-minute weekday practices per week and an occasional weekend practice. Weekday practices are held between the hours of 6:00-9:00 PM. We generally schedule the younger teams in the earlier time slots (6:00-7:30) and the older teams in the later time slots (7:30-9:00). After the tryouts are completed and teams selected, the coaches will inform their players of their practice schedule. 18. Where and when are the Travel games held? Our Travel teams play in various leagues and tournaments. Puma NXTPRO teams will play in select Nationwide Puma Events (in State and Out of State) that include Live Periods in front of college coaches and NXTPRO Finals. The Regional/Local teams are scheduled at gyms mostly in Palm Beach and Broward Counties. Tournaments can be local, regional (in-state), or national (out of state). Most teams have games every weekend on Saturday and Sunday. Some tournaments have weeknight games. This game schedule is drawn up by the tournament/league scheduler and is completely out of the control of Limitless Basketball. Players and parents will be notified of scheduled games as soon as known. 19. Is there a minimum playing time rule for Travel basketball? Limitless does not impose a minimum playing time for the Travel teams. In principle, this means that Travel teams do not have to play any given player even one minute in any given game. Playing time is solely on the discretion of the Head Coach. 20. My child’s coach says he/she needs volunteers. How do I become one? Submit an inquiry on the contact page for more information on becoming a volunteer. A representative will contact you with further details. 21. What will be discussed at the Parent Meeting? Is it important to attend? Yes, it is very important for all parents to attend. The Coaches along with representatives from Limitless Basketball Florida Board will be there to explain the Travel Program, communicate important dates, and answer any questions. If it is simply not possible for you to attend, be sure to ask another parent to attend on your behalf and pick up the information that will be distributed. Attending the parent meeting does not result in a commitment by you and your son to participate. It is for informational purposes only. 22. If I have questions about my child’s team or the Travel program, whom can I ask? Limitless Basketball appreciates your feedback and will answer any questions that arise during the tryouts or the regular season. You can speak with your child’s head coach. You can also send all questions through the contact page so that we can direct them to the appropriate person to reply. 23. Are you Sponsored by Puma? While we are proud members of the PUMA NXTPRO shoe circuit, our organization is not sponsored by Puma. We are responsible for all costs associated with uniform purchases, tournament entry fees, renting indoor gyms, operating costs, and all travel related expenses. As a non-profit organization, we rely on the donations of our community sponsors, when available, and the collection of team dues to cover season costs. 24. What is the cost for the season if a player is selected for a team?
